You know you've got good gamers when the first thing they ask when they see you after a trip is, "So what new games did you bring back?" Gen Con 2010 came and went, leaving a slew of new games in my possession; earlier this week, we played a couple of the latest offerings. First, we played Piece of Cake, by Winning Moves Games and distributed by Rio Grande Games. CAROLYN: Piece of Cake is an ad... more. -
Table Talk #32 – Mystery Express

Finally! After receiving this game a month ago, I finally got to take Mystery Express for a spin this holiday weekend. It seems that, despite the fact that it's the latest gorgeous game from Days of Wonder and that one of the co-designers is Serge Laget (most recently of Ad Astra fame), it's been inordinately difficult to get people to play this. Why? My best guess is because this game makes you t... more. -
BP Oil Spill Board Game?
1 CommentsPosted by Neal Stidham on under Neal Stidham
Interesting piece of board game trivia for readers: several decades ago, BP issued a board game called BP Offshore Oil Strike. This rare game is just what it sounds like; four players build offshore oil rigs and deal with potential hazards. One of those hazards? A blow-out that causes an oil spill. The game isn't so obscure that BoardGameGeek doesn't even have an entry on it (naturally). There ... more. -

Cooperative games are coming into vogue in the board game world, and this gamer welcomes the fresh perspective of competing with fellow players against the game, rather than the usual internecine free-for-all. Designer Matt Leacock, the mind behind one of the biggest smash co-op hits of the past couple of years, Pandemic, has set loose his newest creation, Forbidden Island. As mentioned previously... more.

Mensa Select Games for 2010: Some Quick Hands-on Reviews

While on vacation this past week, I got a chance to try out this year's choices for the Mensa Select award. Every year, a handful of brain-stretching games get the nod from the organization, and the winners are quite often very entertaining games (I've mentioned past year winners such as Apples to Apples and Fluxx, and other notable recipients include Blokus, Magic: the Gathering, Scattergories, a... more. -

Table Talk #29 – Kill Doctor Lucky

Cheapass Games' Kill Doctor Lucky is like Clue in reverse: instead of trying to solve the mystery and catch the murderer, you're trying to be the murderer. For whatever reason, old Dr. Lucky has finally driven you to off the guy, and you wander his mansion, trying to catch him alone so you can finish the deed. Unfortunately, everyone else in the mansion has the same idea. As has been mentioned ... more.

We're back after a week hiatus, and we bring you the goods -- good game talk, that is. This week we go over what we've been playing/watching over the past two weeks. We catch up on a lot of news -- including my breaking the speed run record for New Super Mario Bros. DS (thank you, thank you). And, of course, we talk other nonsense, such as why Reggie loves munchkins. Oh, and we love Tim Ho... more. -
Table Talk #28 – Quixo

More than just a Tic-Tac-Toe knockoff, Quixo should be the game filling the niche that Connect Four or Pente currently occupy in most gaming collections. By now, you'll be familiar with the hallmarks of Gigamic: all wood components, simple but attractive, and intriguing twists in otherwise minimal rules. Quixo features a 5x5 grid of blocks which are blank except for two symbols (X and O) - as w... more.
