Limbo Review

“Give credit where credit is due.” The last half of this famous saying is, ironically, also the name of the last achievement in Xbox Live’s newest arcade title, Limbo. What does the saying mean? Don’t deny people the praises that they rightfully deserve. Games like Limbo, the ones that I more often lump into the category of “art games”, fall victim to this trap all too often. They t... more. -

Are you going to be in the NYC area in the next month? Do you like cutting edge theater productions? Does the idea of mixing video games and performance art make you positively quiver with excitement? Well if any of these three questions were answered in the affirmative than you should head to the Brick Theater, Inc. in Brooklyn from July 9-25th for some really cool video game-themed perfo... more. -
Origins: Edhellen Armoury

This year at Origins, I decided to interview the guys at Edhellen Armoury, a company that specializes in making foam padded weaponry, as well as a variety of extremely detailed armor used in Live Action Roleplaying games, or LARPs. At last year's Origins, the folks at Edhellen were kind enough to give Game Journal Media one of their weapons for review, but we never got around to reviewing it unt... more. -
Origins Coverage: The Stars Are Right

I made no secret of the fact that Steve Jackson Games was my favorite company represented this year at Origins, and I can tell you exactly why: because they have a lot of really well-thought-out games that never cease to entertain me and people I play them with or introduce them to. Thus far my experience with Steve Jackson Games has been limited to their Munchkin card game and its many offshoots,... more. -

While on vacation this past week, I got a chance to try out this year's choices for the Mensa Select award. Every year, a handful of brain-stretching games get the nod from the organization, and the winners are quite often very entertaining games (I've mentioned past year winners such as Apples to Apples and Fluxx, and other notable recipients include Blokus, Magic: the Gathering, Scattergories, a... more. -
ModNation Racers Review

Where were you in September of 1992? If you’re a long-time fan of video games like many of us, you more than likely spent quite a bit of ’92 plopped down in front of your SNES with Super Mario Kart. It was brilliant. The racing, the action, and most importantly, the absolute fun are what made Mario Kart the pinnacle of the kart racing genre. Now take all those wonderful aspects of the game, to... more. -
Split/Second Review

Realism in video games has left a sour taste in many gamers’ mouths on more than one occasion in this console generation. People who had fought tooth-and-nail to get some sense of reality in their games were now wondering why their characters had to suddenly take their friends out for a game of bowling anytime they called just to keep them happy (Shame on you if the reference went unrecognized).... more. -
Alan Wake Review

Tossing a new intellectual property into the video game industry can sometimes be like tossing your own first-born child into shark-infested waters. It is extremely scary and will ultimately tell you if your baby is going to sink or swim. With the case of Alan Wake, however, this baby has been worked on for five years and has been touted to be the next son of God. It has been a long time coming fo... more. -

To begin with (the same way I begin the first video): Go buy this game. I have only just begun the gameplay and I already feel like I've gotten my money's worth out of it. So again (and then in ten seconds when you hear me say it again): Go buy this game. Now, here is my latest Video Journal covering my second favorite game of the year so far (Heavy Rain still sits on top for me). Go buy thi... more. -
Skate 3 Review

In 1967, Harry Nilsson wrote the lyrics, “One is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do.” Skate 3 takes Nilsson’s collectivist idea and runs with it in this newest iteration of the massively popular skateboarding franchise. Published by Electronic Arts and developed by Black Box, Skate 3 slaps you in the torn-up skate shoes of your own creatable character, the same from the past two game... more.
