Dragon Age released for your table

Ferelden is available for a gaming table near you. I was hesitant to post news or teasers about this over the past few months, because having seen licensed pen-and-paper role-playing games crash and burn in the past, I didn't want to unnecessarily inflate hopes. (I didn't even mention this to Adam, who's a big fan of Dragon Age.) But today the product materialized, at least in digital form: Gre... more. -
Table Talk #17 – Miniature Wargaming 101

You've seen them: tables with little plastic trees and molded hills. You've seen the generals standing on either side, amassing rows and regiments of small soldiers, planning out the way the attack will go. And, probably, you've considered what it would be like to command your own tiny army. There's such a broad range of choices in miniatures games these days that one could be excused for feeli... more.

MTG Deckbuilding: Editor Tips
0 CommentsPosted by Reggie Allison on November 4, 2009 under Featured
This is a collaborative article we had an idea for months ago, but due to various unpleasantries and hold-ups, we are just now getting it posted. Sorry for the delay! Basically, this is a collaborative article written by myself, Reggie Allison, with fellow Game Journal Editor Brandon Galm, and one of our semi-recurring guest writers, Rich Wood. Together, we talk about our various strategies when i... more. -
HackMaster Basic Review (Table Top)
3 CommentsPosted by Reggie Allison on under Featured, Reviews
When reviewing any game or in this case piece of gaming literature, the reviewer has to ask him or herself whether or not they feel like the game in question can stand up to the test of time. This may not be an actual question per se, but just a sort of gut instinct one gets from a basic overview of the game in question. Unfortunately, my knee-jerk reaction to HackMaster Basic is “no.” Don... more. -
MTG: Zendikar Review (TCG)

I won’t lie; I haven’t made any secret of the fact that I’ve been generally displeased with the last few sets of Magic: The Gathering. I loved Conflux, but I felt that Shards of Alara had something to be desired, and I flat-out despised Alara Reborn due to (in my opinion) its divergence from everything that makes MTG good. I mean really, who really appreciated an entire SET of cards without... more. -
10 Games that Will Freak You Out

Halloween is upon us, and that means all the major gaming networks will be giving us their lists of top horror games. I thought it would be nice to change it up a bit. You see, I've never been a big fan of "Best of" lists. I always thought it presumptuous to assume your tastes matter to the rest of the world. It is because of this that, rather than giving you my "Top 10 Horror Games of All Tim... more. -
Table Talk #13 – Betrayal at House on the Hill

Sometimes, good games slip through the cracks and into obscurity. Other times, they languish unpublished but with a devout fan following. Hasbro/Avalon Hill's back catalog is a rife source for the latter - ask around online about Star Wars: Epic Duels and note the reaction. Betrayal at House on the Hill also falls into this category: a generic horror game that tries to pack as much punch as possib... more. -
RPG Campaigns: Intricacy and Entwined Story Arcs

As a veteran gamer and GM, something that I have always appreciated and striven for within my own campaigns is intricacy. Of course, as fellow Game Journal editor Brandon Galm pointed out in his article "Let's Start at the Beginning," unless you play PC beginnings separately and bring the individuals together as part of a predetermined story arc, of course in most cases as a GM you have no option ... more. -
How DLC Can Save Madden (and EA Sports)

August saw the annual holiday for sports gamers known as “Madden Day”—the day that the newest iteration of EA Sports’ most popular franchise hits the streets. This year’s version, appropriately titled Madden NFL 10, promises (as EA does every year) new innovation, better AI, and a more life-like experience. And, you know what, I am sure that Madden NFL 10 does just that. But, for all ... more.
