You know you've got good gamers when the first thing they ask when they see you after a trip is, "So what new games did you bring back?" Gen Con 2010 came and went, leaving a slew of new games in my possession; earlier this week, we played a couple of the latest offerings. First, we played Piece of Cake, by Winning Moves Games and distributed by Rio Grande Games. CAROLYN: Piece of Cake is an ad... more. -
Gen Con 2010 – Day 3 and Wrap-up

Gen Con keeps getting bigger... but is that a good thing? Attendance led to the show feeling like it was bursting at the seams; next year, the enormous new 34-story Marriott located across the street from the Indianapolis Convention Center will be open, and the convention center itself is due to complete its expansion in time for the event as well. On the one hand, this will allow for more space (... more. -

Among the news of note, True Dungeon raised $9,000 for the Gary Gygax Memorial Fund, presented to Gygax's widow Gail today, with the intent of erecting a monument to Gary Gygax (co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons, if you didn't know) in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Privateer Press also unveiled the actual demo of the Warmachine video game in production with White Moon Dreams, and you can take a look ... more. -
Gen Con 2010 – Day 1 Rundown

Yesterday was a fairly hectic day, as the opening day of Gen Con tends to be: Thursday is the day of shameless commerce. The exhibit hall, though smaller than last year's in terms of booths, had quite a few tantalizing treats for gamers first thing in the morning. Wizards of the Coast mopped up, certainly, as a swarm of D&D players descended upon their space to buy the new iteration of the ... more. -

Greetings from Indianapolis! Gen Con 2010 is off to a roaring start... sort of. [caption id="attachment_5195" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="What you see when you come through the front doors... minus most of the people."][/caption] What's down: officially, the amount of stuff to do this year, slightly. The exhibit hall is smaller than last year - the entire back row of the hall is e... more. -
Gen Con 2010 Preview

This year's Gen Con promises a few new and interesting offerings. Some of these have already appeared on my radar (and in this blog) but bear repeating; others are fully surprises. Without further ado, here's my list of ten highlights (for me, at least) at this year's show: 1) Cadwallon: City of Thieves. This is where I will be first thing Thursday morning. Fantasy Flight was thought to have co... more. -

Up-and-coming online game site Infrno has announced a blitz open beta for the new iteration of its online gaming table and related services. The full service will go live concurrent with Gen Con 2010, and there are special tie-in events planned at the convention itself. For roleplayers operating on a difficult schedule or with a group that isn't all gathered in the same place, Infrno seems to b... more. -
Table Talk #32 – Mystery Express

Finally! After receiving this game a month ago, I finally got to take Mystery Express for a spin this holiday weekend. It seems that, despite the fact that it's the latest gorgeous game from Days of Wonder and that one of the co-designers is Serge Laget (most recently of Ad Astra fame), it's been inordinately difficult to get people to play this. Why? My best guess is because this game makes you t... more. -
BP Oil Spill Board Game?

Interesting piece of board game trivia for readers: several decades ago, BP issued a board game called BP Offshore Oil Strike. This rare game is just what it sounds like; four players build offshore oil rigs and deal with potential hazards. One of those hazards? A blow-out that causes an oil spill. The game isn't so obscure that BoardGameGeek doesn't even have an entry on it (naturally). There ... more. -
Table Talk #31 – Forbidden Island

Cooperative games are coming into vogue in the board game world, and this gamer welcomes the fresh perspective of competing with fellow players against the game, rather than the usual internecine free-for-all. Designer Matt Leacock, the mind behind one of the biggest smash co-op hits of the past couple of years, Pandemic, has set loose his newest creation, Forbidden Island. As mentioned previously... more.
