The second of Fantasy Flight Games’ “secret projects” was announced today: a brand-new edition of the classic Games Workshop strategy game Horus Heresy.
Back in the day, Games Workshop put out some board games tied in to their existing properties that fans still talk about to this day – as much because they’re long out of print and thus rare and expensive as because they were entertaining games. Recently, Fantasy Flight’s deal with Games Workshop has resulted in some interesting reworkings of nearly forgotten offerings like Chaos Marauders and Warrior Knights, a well-received retooling of Talisman, and new additions to the cosmos of Games Workshop-inspired products like Chaos in the Old World.
So when FFG hinted at GenCon about three new secret projects in the pipeline, speculation ran rampant: the rumors about Space Hulk were put down by a clause in Fantasy Flight’s contract with GW prohibiting the licensing of miniature combat games… as well as by GW’s in-house reissue of Space Hulk the following month.
It looks like FFG has stepped up to bigger ventures – one of GW’s best-known and most-sought old games, Horus Heresy, is getting the Fantasy Flight makeover. The game, based on the Warhammer 40,000 backstory, recreates the battles between the Emperor and his loyal Space Marines against the traitor legions corrupted by Chaos under the banner of Horus, the Imperium’s greatest general and chief betrayer.
The announced price point is US$99.95, on par with the Space Hulk reprint, and features all-new sculpted plastic miniatures for Marine, Chaos, and Imperial Guard units, Titan vehicles, and 3D plastic terrain pieces to represent the scarred battlefield of Terra and the bastions of the Emperor’s Golden Palace.
Unlike GW’s limited edition Space Hulk anniversary edition last September, indications are that the print run for this game will be an ongoing regular product; the game is likely to sell out initially, though, if similar cases like Rogue Trader and Chaos in the Old World are any indicator of how fervent GW fans are about getting their hands on Fantasy Flight’s contributions.
The teaser site is here; more info will be appearing as the release date approaches.
