Letter Roll is a party/educational game from Out of the Box publishers. It’s designed for anywhere between 2 and 8 players and is listed for ages 8 and up. The object of the game is to list as many words possible containing three specific letters in a set amount of time. The letters are determined by rolling four letter dice, one of which is removed from play. The difficulty of the word is determined by which dice you choose. There are seven 20-sided dice total color-coded white, blue, and orange. The white dice contains frequently used letters, blue less frequently used, and orange infrequently used. There are no stipulations on which dice players can choose, so one could choose three white dice and one blue for a fairly easy letter selection, or if somebody’s in a froggy mood, that player could choose three blue and two orange then sit back and watch the ensuing brain hemorrhages.

Once the letters are determined players have two minutes in a standard game, or one minute in a quick game, to write down as many words as they can containing all three letters. Thankfully the order of the letters doesn’t matter, so say if I rolled P-R-A, I could write down the words appraise, part, apparatus, etc. Points are awarded for each word you write that none of the other players thought of, much like Scattergories.

I really enjoyed this game, although I have to say that I did find a cheap way of racking up points by writing down every possible permutation of a word. For example, I wouldn’t just write part, but also parted, parts, parting, depart, departing, well, you get the idea. Anyway, one of the things I really enjoy about Letter Roll is that the instructions include variant rules for less experienced and advanced players, which makes this very versatile. Overall this game is well worth $24.99.
