Ok, please don’t read this and think that I am some sick dude who actually likes being diseased, like those strange individuals who routinely go in for elective surgeries because they enjoy them or odd folks who get a kick out of car wrecks like in the film Crash. I am not one of “those people,” although witnesses to my recent knee injury and my recovery may say otherwise. The Dengue Fever I am referring to in this post happens to be a band, a very, very cool band. Now, before you go too far and say “this has nothing to do with gaming,” I’ll just state up front that this post HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GAMING.
Its my blog, right? And I’ll cry if I want to. No, really, I’ll tell you about what I want to and the thing that is on my mind right now is cool music. I happen to be a big fan of cool music and I am always on the look out for something interesting to listen to. I find that most of the trash that graces the airwaves in America, and that masks itself as “hits,” just isn’t worth my time. Most popular music is dreck. I’m appalled by what gets played on the radio when so many talented folks just get overlooked. So, I wanted to highlight one such group and to perhaps infect some others with a bit of fever for this music, Dengue Fever that is.
I discovered this band while checking out the music for Showtime’s hip show Weeds. Once again, I have been watching TV shows that fellow www.game-journal.com editor Reggie Allison has been passing my way. At this point in my life, he seems to be the chief programmer of my television. I even put aside my own selections of movies from Netflix in favor of watching what he gave to me. The music on the show is pretty doggone cool, so I thought I would look up the show on-line and see what they have to offer information-wise on the music. What I found was a whole Weeds radio station chocked-full of fun and cool little music gems and Dengue Fever is my favorite so far. I liked them so much I zipped over to Amazon.com and bought all three of their albums, and I don’t even have a job right now! Am I crazy? Just crazy with the love for the coolest surfer/pop/Cambodian rock band to grace the airwaves. Listen to this group and I challenge you not to be moved, literally, by their groovy tunes. I don’t speak Cambodian, so I have no clue what they are singing about, but that matters little to my ears. Check it out. Now, I must go finish watching episodes of Weeds. I left off to write this column at a cliff-hanger and I am dying to know what happens next and hear more cool tunes . . .
